In one of its most dramatic episodes yet, Emmerdale explored Cain’s dark past as he and his mother Faith reflected on their abusive family life
EMMERDALE viewers praised the show as “the best soap on TV” tonight following a dramatic flashback episode in which Cain Dingle and his mother Faith explored their abusive past.
As Cain (Jeff Hordley) and Moira (Natalie J. Robb) reject their son Isaac, Faith (Sally Dexter) takes him to his childhood home, where they were abused by drunk Shadrach, to force him to relive his painful past and explain why she abandoned them.
The dramatic scenes showed Cain and Chas as children watching Faith being terrorised by her abusive husband.
Later viewers saw how once Faith was out of the picture, Shadrach turned his anger onto Cain to punish him for Faith abandoning them – which is now why Cain fears being a father himself.
The episode reached a dramatic climax when after facing his past, Cain realised that he could be a father and was nothing like his dad – and returned to Moira to tell her to would care for Isaac.
Child actors James Prentice and Charleigh Brierley played young Cain and Chas, while Fleur Keith took on Faith and Matt Sutton played Shadrach – and viewers flocked to Twitter to praise the new cast, original and the hard-hitting storyline.
One tweeted: “Probably the biggest character development I've seen for Cain since he first appeared. Hurrah for the background episode. #Emmerdale”
Another wrote: “Whoever was responsible for the casting in tonight's #Emmerdale needs a pat on the back. The resemblance between the actors & flashbacks are uncanny. 👏”
A third added: “@emmerdale 1st Class episode tonight, 2 very emotional topics handled very sensitively.🙏 A special mention too, for the actors that played the "young" Cain, Chas & Faith. 👏👏 #emmerdale @ITV”
Someone else described the casting as “perfect”: “#Emmerdale is on FIRE tonight. Great Cain/Faith scenes. Finally using Faith good and properly. How long has it been?! So good to see Cain in this way and the young Faith is spitting image. Perfect casting. Best soap on TV right now.”

And another praised the show for its innovative storytelling: “Have to say #Emmerdale is just excellent at thinking outside the rules sometimes – this Cain and Faith storyline is very well done. Emotional”
While others declared that the soap should be cleaning up at awards shows.

“Loving ♥️ emmerdale tonight, this is exactly why it wins so many awards over the other soaps 👌😀 #emmerdale”
“Heartbroken Cain! Jeff Hordley is NEVER allowed to leave #Emmerdale. How he doesn't get all the awards himself year after year is beyond me!”
.@emmerdale excellent casting for the younger version of Faith. The two actresses must be related ! #Emmerdale #cain #faith #itv
