The British Soap Awards is one of the starriest nights of the showbiz calendar. And this year was no different.
One change, however, was the ceremony’s host – Jane McDonald did the honours at The Lowry, Salford Quays, following Phillip Schofield’s resignation from ITV last month.
He had been scheduled to host the awards after he left This Morning, however, he dramatically resigned from the channel when he admitted he had lied about his affair with a younger colleague on This Morning.
Schofield had been a regular fixture on the British Soap Awards since 2006. From 2006 to 2008, he co-hosted the awards with Fern Britton. Thereafter he took on solo presenting duties.

The British Soap Awards 2023 will be broadcast on Tuesday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
On 20 May Schofield stepped down from This Morning following reports of a falling out between himself and his co-presenter Holly Willoughby. At this stage he was still scheduled to present the British Soap Awards.
However, on 26 May, he released a statement to the Daily Mail admitting to lying about an “unwise, but not illegal” affair with a younger male colleague on This Morning.
In his statement, Schofield, who came out as gay in 2020, apologised to all he had lied to, including his wife of 30 years, Stephanie Lowe.
He added: “I am painfully conscious that I have lied to my employers at ITV, to my colleagues and friends, to my agents, to the media and therefore the public and most importantly of all to my family. I am so very, very sorry, as I am for having been unfaithful to my wife.”
Schofield’s talent agency of 35 years, YMU, also cut ties with the presenter. ITV said it was “deeply disappointed by the admissions of deceit” by Schofield, adding: “We accept his resignation from ITV and therefore can confirm that he will not be appearing on ITV as had previously been stated.”
This left the channel scrabbling around for a new host for the Soap Awards, with popular singer and present McDonald stepping into the breach.
ITV has said it investigated “rumours of a relationship” between Schofield and an ITV employee in 2020, but claims both parties “categorically and repeatedly denied” it.
The channel has instructed a barrister to carry out an external review of the facts surrounding Schofield’s relationship, according to a letter from chief executive, Dame Carolyn McCall.
Ms McCall is expected to appear before the Commons Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) Committee next week to be grilled by MPs over Schofield’s revelations.
