Former Juventus manager Andrea Pirlo has expressed interest in managing Belgium after Roberto Martinez parted ways with the Dutch side.
The former Italy international, who was fired from the Allianz Stadium in May of last year, has spent the last six months overseeing Fatih Karagümrük of the Turkish Super Lig.
The Italian has focused on the Red Devils despite only taking on his present position in the summer, following Roberto Martinez’s resignation as coach of Belgium after the FIFA World Cup 2022.
According to the Dutch news outlet HLN, Pirlo is one of the coaches that is reportedly interested in replacing Martinez as Belgium’s head coach.
Pirlo was one of the coaches who recently submitted his or her resume to Belgium’s top officials in light of the open position.
However, the board’s requirements for their new coach include things like being a tactical specialist and a serial winner.
After his unsuccessful stint with Juventus and a dismal start to life in Turkey, where Fatih Karagümrük is currently ranked 10th in the league, there are worries that Pirlo is not a “serial winner.”
Belgium football federation’s top officials will meet on Friday to talk about the current pool of applicants to announce their new coach by the end of the month.
Meanwhile, Thierry Henry, who is Belgium’s current assistant coach has also shown interest in the role.
Henry started working for the Red Devils in 2016, however, he soon left to pursue his own management endeavours with Monaco and Montreal Impact. After unsuccessful experiences there, he came back in 2021 as Belgium’s assistant.
