KENANSVILLE, Duplin County – A crash in Kenansville Wednesday morning was the result of an impaired driver who ran into a transformer and caused a delay for schools in the area.
According to Highway Patrol troopers, a car accident took out power lines on N.C. 24, near N.C. 903. Troopers confirmed one person was injured in the wreck. NewsChannel 12's Jessica Albert reports Dale Hunt, 48, of Watha, was traveling on Mallard Road when he hit a transformer that controls much of the the power to Duplin County.
Hunt was treated and released. He was charged with driving while impaired.
A Duke Energy map indicates the power outage was reported just after 2 a.m. Crews were working to restore power to everyone. According to troopers, the road was expected to be partially closed for more than half the day. At the height of the outage, almost 1,000 customers were without power. Duplin County Schools were running on a two-hour delay because of the power outages. James Sprunt Community College opened at 10 a.m.
