मिर्ज़ा ग़ालिब दुनिया के सबसे बड़े और सबसे जटिल शायर माने जाते हैं। उनकी शायरी का दुनिया भर की भाषाओं में अनुवाद हुआ है। लेकिन अनुवाद के ऐसे प्रयास कम ही हुए हैं जिनमें शेर का अर्थ और लय दोनों कायम रखने में कामयाबी मिली हो। चंडीगढ़ में रहने वाले सॉफ्टवेयर इंजीनियर विकास इस्सर अमर उजाला काव्य के पुराने पाठक हैं। वे उर्दू शायरी से बड़ा लगाव रखते हैं। उन्होंने ग़ालिब के कुछ मशहूर शेरों का अंग्रेज़ी में अनुवाद किया है।
ना था कुछ तो ख़ुदा था, ना होता तो ख़ुदा होता
मिटाया मुझको होने ने, ना होता मैं तो क्या होता
God manifests even in emptiness and nothingness,
Question of my humble existence seems meaningless.
उसे कौन देख सकता कि यगाना है वो यकता
जो दुई की बू भी होती तो कहीं दो-चार होता
Who has the power to see the Almighty unique, one & one only
There is no indication of duality for He would have been many
जला है जिस्म जहां दिल भी जल गया होता
कुरेदते हो अब राख जुस्तजू क्या है
Like the burning of the mortal core,
my desires of heart got charred that I bore,
Now What effect it would bring to fore?
When my desires become ashes and are no more.
'ग़ालिब' बुरा न मान जो वाइज़ बुरा कहे
ऐसा भी कोई है कि सब अच्छा कहें जिसे
Ghalib, Do not feel low if preacher calls you bad,
This is the way of the world so why feel sad ?
तुम जानो तुम को ग़ैर से जो रस्म-ओ-राह हो
मुझ को भी पूछते रहो तो क्या गुनाह हो
if you maintain customs with someone, feel free
Won’t be a sin either if you sometimes ask about me.
था ज़िंदगी में मर्ग का खटका लगा हुआ
उड़ने से पेश्तर भी मेरा रंग ज़र्द था
The notion of death always lingered in my mind,
It deterred me to push my limits for new to find.
क़तरा में दजला दिखाई न दे और जुज़्व में कुल
खेल लड़कों का हुआ, दीदा ए बीना न हुआ
It is not a discerning eye which cannot see ocean in a drop, and fragment in a “Whole”
It is a vision of a child & not of a sage, who connects to the matter but not to the “Soul”
जान दीए दी हुई उसी की थी
हक़ तो यूँ है कि हक़ अदा न हुआ
Life no matter how I claim to be mine, fact remains every breath I do take is Thine,
Vanity no matter how I extol of mine, fact remains my inability to repay Thine.
