Day 3 of the Black College World Series took place Friday in Montgomery, Alabama, and the field has been officially trimmed down to two teams.
Four teams entered the day with a chance to advance to Saturday’s final, although the road for two team’s was a bit more difficult than the others.
Talladega College took on Bluefield State University for a chance to clinch a ticket to the Final and be just a single win away from the title. Following that matchup, Edward Waters University would take on Florida Memorial University for a chance to stay alive for the nightcap against the loser of the morning game.
Here’s a look at how the day’s action went.
Friday Scores:
Talladega College 3, Bluefield State 2
Edward Waters University 3, Florida Memorial 2
Bluefield State 12, Edward Waters University 7
Saturday Schedule (Times ET):
Game 10: Bluefield State vs. Talladega College, 3 p.m.
Game 11: Bluefield State vs. Talladega College, 30 minutes after Game 10 (if necessary)
Talladega College 3, Bluefield State 2
This was the least pressured game of the day, considering that an elimination was not at stake.
Talladega College advanced to the final with the victory and have a lot of room to work with in order to earn the title. The Tornadoes just have to win one of two games, as it enters the final undefeated in the tournament.
An Allen Morel solo home run in the fifth inning gave Talladega a lead, and the team’s would trade runs and the game was tied at 2-2 in the eighth. That’s where Jeriel Lamboy played the hero, stroking an RBI single that gave the Tornadoes the lead it needed to win.
Talladega had seven hits and committed one error while Bluefield had six hits and a clean day in the field. The Tornadoes pitching staff recorded seven strikeouts.
Edward Waters University 3, Florida Memorial 2
For the second time in the tournament, Edward Waters University faced Florida Memorial. For the second consecutive time, Edward Waters would emerge victorious.
All of the damage was done in the middle innings, as the two sides traded a run in the fourth-and-fifth innings. However, Edward Waters loaded the base once again in the sixth inning, and a walk to Leonel Garcia would bring in the games’ leading run.
Edward Waters had nine hits while Florida Memorial only mustered six. This was the end of the road for Florida Memorial, as the run came to a close with a 1-2 record.
Bluefield State 12, Edward Waters University 7
Edward Waters staved off elimination in the afternoon contest, but a rematch of the morning’s action was apparently meant to be.
Edward Waters led 4-0 in the third inning, but Bluefield State would first put one run on the board and then Korbin Bostic smacked a line drive over the right field fence to secure a grand slam and a 5-4 lead.
Bluefield State would add another run and would take a 6-4 lead into the seventh inning, but Edward Waters would add another three runs, including a Torry Jones inside-the-park-home-run, to take a lead for the first time before that grand slam. However, Bluefield State would score the next five and would advance to the final.
