Higher literacy rates, fewer CBSE schools as compared to more populous northern Indian states, and more focused students and teachers are some of the reasons why Trivandrum, Bengaluru and Chennai trump the northern Indian cities to top the CBSE results in terms of overall pass percentage.
In the recently declared CBSE 2023 results, the Trivandrum region comprising schools in Kerala and Lakshadweep retained its top position nationally. Trivandrum region secured a 99.91% pass in both class X and XII board exams this year. The national overall pass percentages for classes X and XII are 93.12 and 87.33. In 2022, the Trivandrum region saw 99.68% and 98.83% of students passed classes X and XII.
Bengaluru and Chennai regions secured second and third positions respectively, in both class X and XII in 2023. Bengaluru secured 99.18% and 98.64% pass in class X and XII respectively; Chennai secured 99.14% and 97.40% pass in class X and XII respectively. In 2022, Bengaluru scored 98.16% and Chennai secured 97.79% in class XII results. In the CBSE class X result 2022, Bengaluru had the pass percentage of 98.22% and Chennai, 98.97%.
In comparison, Delhi’s pass percentage dipped to 92.21% in 2023 from last year’s 96.29%. With 79.23%, UP had the least percentage of students who cleared class XII exams, after Chhattisgarh (76.91%), and Arunachal Pradesh (66.10%). In CBSE class X results, UP secured a better pass percentage than Delhi with 88.6% but was behind Bihar (94.6%).
Experts say that students in south Indian cities are more focused as a majority of them are fourth-generation learners; states too consistently focus on education. “Other places are also catching up; it will take time. Socio-economic background and parental support are also important in determining the results,” says Dr Joseph Emmanuel, director, Academic, CBSE.
In the north, says Sanyam Bhardwaj, controller of examinations, CBSE, the number of CBSE students is more, covering the states of UP, Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Punjab, etc. “By nature, students engage in various activities they tend to spend more time on gadgets owing to the impact of modernisation, as compared to the South where the scope for distraction seems to be less,” said Bharadwaj.
Bri Samaradhyamrita Chaitanya, principal, Amrita Vidyalayam, Thalassery, Kerala, says that parents with academic and technological bent of mind support students in southern cities. Dedicated teachers help achieve almost 100% results.
Schools train students at the micro level and conduct a lot of mock tests and practice exams, to ease the process. “We conduct three mock exams with the full syllabus, before these there are daily practice tests to that students analyse their mistakes and rectify them. Narayana schools also offer foundation programmes for JEE and NEET entrance exams that also help students perform better in the CBSE exam,” says P Prameela, academic director, Narayana Group, Hyderabad.
In north India, many students are first-generation learners, and some students face problems in communicating effectively. In south India, parental support is paramount, says Shanti Krishnamurthy, director, Education Cell, Chinmaya Mission.
Indra Mani Upadhyay, PGT Hindi, Kendriya Vidyalaya, CRPF, Lucknow, says the southern states invest more in primary education, which pays rich dividends in the form of stellar CBSE results.
Many students in the South simultaneously prepare for the JEE and NEET entrance exams and that helps them in cracking the boards as well. “Many students are moving out of school system after class X to coaching centres to prepare for JEE Advanced and NEET exams, so it is not difficult for them to score well in the CBSE board exams. The focus is no longer on the board exam as it has now become a qualifying exam for other entrance exams,” explains Sudha Acharya, principal, ITPL School and chairperson NPSC.
