The God of High School, by Yongje Park, is a famous Korean manhwa webtoon that’s currently being made into an anime. It is gaining widespread popularity thanks to its fast-paced story and well-animated fight scenes.
Episode 11 featured some of the best fights in GOH to date. The match between Jin Mori and Park Ilpyo was spectacular and resulted in new powers awakening in both of them.
With Mandeok Sang calling down what seems like hundreds of angel-like beings through a gate in the sky, the Key, and Mujin announcing the end of ‘GOH,’ the episode concluded dramatically.
In The God of High School Episode 12, “Fox/God,” we get to see Ilpyo and Jegal fight, as The Six try to keep a devastating god from ending the world for good.
Episode 11, titled “Lay/Key,” covered chapters 85-88 of the webtoon and then diverged from it. After Ilpyo’s awakening, Mori was no match for him and was toyed with for a good 10 minutes.
When Ilpyo finally readied his last attack to finish this match, it triggered something within Mori as he had a black and white flashback of a time that existed long before the present.
There, it almost seemed as if he was leading a great army as he stood in the front, holding a large rod-like weapon, with people all around him.
After this, something changed within Mori. He managed to push Ilpyo back with just one hand, and when the latter counter-attacked, with what seemed like a half-illusionary rod similar to the one in the flashback, he flung him far away from the ground.
Finally, a gigantic hand appeared before Ilpyo and slammed him into the arena, thus sealing Mori’s win. As Mori came back to his senses, two main things were happening simultaneously on the other side.
The first one was Park Mujin and Sang Mandeok stopping their fight midway and being astonished by Ilpyo, i.e., the Key’s loss. Suspicious of the energy spike caused due to Mori, the Nox Bishop left.
The second major event was Jugok Jeon (the incapacitated grandson of one of the Six) losing control. While confronting Jegal, they both burst into Ilpyo’s hospital room.
Caught up in this fight, Ilpyo fought against Jugok and kept his distance from Jegal at the same time. As Jegal finally had enough and killed Jugok, he also sliced off Park Seungah’s leg and Hyeonbok Ryu’s arm.
This scene resembled the one in the past where Taek had done the same to Seungyeon, and Ilpyo lost control. With Mandeok Sang calling down what seemed like hundreds of angel-like beings through a gate in the sky, the Key, and Mujin announcing the end of ‘GOH,’ the episode concluded.
From a show about high school students fighting to a giant god falling down from the sky, we should not be surprised by anything else at this point. However, episode 12 manages to do just that.
Episode 12, titled “Fox/God,” covers chapters 97 to 110 of the webtoon. The episode begins with Mandeok calling down thousands of nephilims and a God, in order to carry out a mass purging.
As The Six and GOH Commissioners start fighting back to prevent the end of the world (literally), Ilpyo clashes against Taek Jegal.
In the midst of this utter chaos, the scene skips to Mori, Mira, and Daewi, looking at this and wondering the same thing as us – what the hell is even happening?
On the other hand, Mubok is dead, resulting in his grandfather vowing to take revenge. This scene would have felt more emotional to the fans if not for the fact that the man was one of the strongest in the country, and his anger could possibly hasten the world’s end.
Coming back to Ilpyo and Jegal’s fight, the former has just about won when Taek’s tentacles ensnare him. Next, we see a flashback where his father basically tells him to inherit his company, and not become a loser, while somehow Jegal interprets it as
“I must rule the world.”
Following up on this crazy self oath to not become a loser, something unleashes within him as black marks cover his body.
Unleashing incredible powers upon Ilpyo, the fox barely has enough strength to continue. With black giants randomly popping up around him, he cannot focus his power on one spot, and his trauma isn’t enough to make him carry on. He loses against Jegal, and the Key comes out from within him.
As expected, both Nox and The Six scramble to obtain it; however, it somehow ends up in the hands of our protagonist, Mori. How shocking. While this is happening, in the sky over the arena, a golden buddha like figure descends.
One of the best highlights of this episode is seeing the Commissioner O’s giant dragon Changshik eating nephilims like candy, and Q slicing them up while dreaming of money bags. Even Park Mujin’s giant cross barrier and The Six’s fight against Nox is entertaining to watch.
At this time, some of the enemy forces turn towards the kids, and to prevent them from getting hurt, Mujin sends them away.
This does seem counterproductive as he also sends Taek along with them. In this new location, Daewi and Mira come across Ilpyo’s wounded teammates. As we finally glimpse Daewi’s Charyeok called Haetae, when he heals them, the devil arrives.
Defeated by Taek Jegal, Daewi and Mira are terribly wounded. Fortunately, Mori arrives in time to face off against him. While this is happening, above the surface, things have gotten even crazier.
To defeat the God, the United States of America sent hundreds of nuclear missiles towards South Korea, so now the country probably is doomed either way.
Well, that’s what the case should be, right? Wrong. Jaeson Jeon {the badass grandpa, remember?) turns out to be extremely powerful as he first teleports all the people within South Korea outside the danger area, and then combines all the nuclear missiles into one.
Furthermore, he even summons a meteor (you heard that right) to push the gigantic missile into God. It works, and with a huge explosion, everything goes silent.
Due to the nuclear blast, Mori and Jegal’s fight is interrupted, as they all return to the surface. The Key is revealed in Mori’s hands, which the latter now comes to possess.
As everyone watches, Taek Jegal consumes the Key and turns into a baby, and then a full-fledged winged God. With a customary “You losers will die” threat, the episode ends, leaving us more confused than ever.
Episode 12 feels like it has been put together by someone who knows everything about the story but has failed to take the anime viewers into consideration.
The whole show feels like a short promotion for the original webtoon, and while it has some interesting fights to hook in new viewers, the story lacks substance.
Overall, the saving grace of this episode, just like the earlier ones, is the action. With one episode left in season one, let’s hope the end will provide some answers, all the while serving us with the same amount of thrilling battles.
Episode 13 will introduce Taek Jegal as the main antagonist, as he tries to follow through with his crazy plan of ruling over the world.
Who knows, it might just work. We might also see Mori finally unleashing his hidden power and facing off against him in a true shonen battle fashion.
